Car-sharing. Car rental software

Car-sharing, an increasingly popular, innovative car rental system, is slowly coming to Poland. Its purpose is, among other things, to encourage drivers to give up their own car and use a car rented for minutes. It’s good to know what car-sharing is and why it’s worth of using.

History of car-sharing

Car-sharing history dates back to the 40s. This was the first time, when the idea of sharing cars between the Zurich housing association was created. It’s easy to imagine the benefits. In addition to the cost savings associated with buying and maintaining a car, parking at a residential building was not a problem for its residents. It was easy to determine how much parking space was needed, so that residents could avoid irritating absence of parking space. Since the 1970s, the idea has been developed in other cities, including Amsterdam. The first official “experiment” of car sharing was done in the UK in the late 1970’s. In the ’80s and ’90s, more and more of these projects were developed worldwide, but it was not until the 21st century that car-sharing became popular worldwide.

How does it work?

Technically, car-sharing typically works through various types of websites, mobile applications, or is managed by systems that communicate with the user via SMS. Usually, user only needs to register in the system to be able to use cars, which are available in the city. The rental fee depends on the time of rental or the number of kilometers traveled.

Car-sharing vs traditional car rental

It is hard not to associate car-sharing with well-known car rentals. So, what are the differences between one another? First of all, the user is able to rent a car 24/7, regardless of the time of day or night. Booking systems operate independently of the office, not like in a traditional rental. In addition, we pay exactly for the amount of miles traveled or the time of car use. Nothing stops you to rent a car for 5 or 10 minutes if you need to reach a shopping centre, doctor or work. Another difference is also the fact that most fuel costs are also on the side of the car-sharing company. The location of the car is not dependent on the seat of the company. They are located in different places in the city depending on where the car was left by the previous user.

Car-sharing assumptions

The aim of car sharing is undoubtedly to make it easier to get around town without owning a car. Also, in case of a breakdown of a private car, the driver has the possibility to rent a car, for example, to get to work. In addition, environmental concern is also important. If some drivers were able to give up a car for a car-sharing operation in the city, the amount of exhaust would be at least partially reduced and the traffic jams in the larger cities would be reduced.

One of the elements necessary for the functioning of the car-sharing platform is the fleet management system. An example of such a system is FleetNet, the software that consists of a mobile application, a website and an administration panel. The customer is able to rent a car both via mobile application as well as via website with just a single click. Thanks to detailed information about the journeys available after logging in, customer has the opportunity to see all his rides and expenses associated with them. Both on the website and in the mobile application, the most important and most visible element is a map that clearly lists all available cars in their current location. In addition to the map, the site and the mobile application provide access to information about promotions and news related to the service. The FleetNet administration panel is an expansive yet transparent and intuitive tool that allows administrator to control the status of all vehicles, monitor every journey and communicate with customers and employees. Also, every user data can be entered into the system and modified from the admin panel, so that FleetNet software is dedicated to traditional car rental as well.
